Yarn weight chart and yarn converter

What is DK in US terms? Is aran the same as worsted? The chart names every yarn weight in the US, the UK and Australia, with the hook to use. The converters turn yards into meters, grams into ounces and inches into centimeters, both ways.

Categories, hook ranges and gauges from the Craft Yarn Council Standard Yarn Weight System. Amigurumi is usually worked a hook size or two smaller than the label says, so the stitches stay tight and the stuffing hides.

Converting a yarn label

  1. Type in either box of a converter: the other one updates as you type.
  2. To compare two yarns, convert both labels to the same units and compare the length per 100 g. A similar length per gram means a similar thickness.

How to read a yarn weight

The Craft Yarn Council numbers yarn weights from 0 (lace) to 7 (jumbo): look for the number inside the yarn ball symbol on the label. Countries name the same thickness differently: US DK is UK DK and Australian 8 ply, and US worsted is close to UK aran and Australian 10 ply.

Yon Yarn is a worsted (medium, 4) cotton blend made for amigurumi: it doesn't split, and every stitch is easy to see and count.

Questions crocheters ask

Is DK the same as worsted?

No. DK is a light (3) yarn, a little thinner than worsted (medium, 4). Swapping one for the other changes the size of your piece.

How many meters are in a yard?

1 yard is 0.9144 meters, so 100 yards is about 91 meters. 1 meter is about 1.09 yards.

What is worsted weight yarn called in the UK?

The closest UK name is aran, and Australia calls it 10 ply. All three are Craft Yarn Council medium (4).

What yarn weight is best for amigurumi?

Worsted (medium, 4) and DK (light, 3) are the most common. Medium is easier for beginners: the stitches are bigger and easier to count.
