Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Yon Crochet: the free Pattern Trainer, kits, video lessons, Yon Plus, and rewards.

Getting Started

Is crochet hard to learn for beginners?

Not at all! Crochet is one of the most beginner-friendly crafts you can pick up. With the right kit and step-by-step video guidance, most people finish their first character in a weekend. Our starter kits come with everything you need, no experience required.

Is there a free way to try Yon Crochet?

Yes. The Pattern Trainer is completely free, with no purchase and no account required. It teaches you to read crochet patterns, which is the skill most video tutorials skip. Twenty two short lessons are live across two units: reading a single round, then reading a whole multi-piece pattern. Your progress saves on your device, and signing in is optional so your progress and Yon Coins follow you between devices.

Can left-handed people learn to crochet with Yon?

Yes, and not by mirroring a video. Every left-hand lesson is filmed separately with a left-handed crocheter, so the text on screen reads correctly and the yarn behaves exactly the way it will in your hands. Every character, all nine of them, ships with a full left-hand version at no extra cost. Tap the handedness toggle inside the lesson player to switch anytime.

What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese craft of crocheting small stuffed characters. The word combines ami (crocheted) and nuigurumi (stuffed doll). In practice it means working single crochet in a tight spiral to build rounded three-dimensional shapes, rather than the flat rows you would use for a scarf or a blanket.

It is a good place to start as a beginner because a finished piece is small, it uses only a handful of stitches, and a recognisable character emerges within the first hour. Every Yon character is an amigurumi project.

What supplies do I need to start crocheting?

Less than you might think. For amigurumi you need a crochet hook (4 to 5mm suits worsted weight yarn), a smooth medium-weight yarn, polyester stuffing, safety eyes, stitch markers to keep your place in a spiral, and a blunt needle for sewing pieces together.

Every Yon kit arrives with all of it matched and measured, so there is nothing to source or guess at. If you already have your own supplies you can skip the kit entirely and use the free Pattern Trainer or buy a standalone lesson.

How long does it take to learn crochet?

You can crochet a small character in 1–2 hours once you know the basics. Most beginners are confident with the core stitches within a few days of casual practice. Every beginner lesson starts from absolute zero and teaches all 14 core amigurumi skills, so you go from first stitch to finished character in one project.

What yarn is best for beginners?

A smooth, medium-weight yarn that is easy to see and forgiving of mistakes. That is exactly why every Yon Crochet kit comes with Yon Yarn: a soft 68% cotton / 32% nylon blend, pre-matched in the exact colours your character needs, so there is no guesswork involved.

Kits & Products

What comes in a Yon Crochet kit?

Every kit includes pre-cut yarn in the exact colours you need, a crochet hook, a blunt needle, stuffing, and a safety eyes set. Everything is matched and measured: just open the box and start crocheting. Access to the companion video lesson is included with every kit purchase.

What makes Yon Crochet kits different from other crochet kits?

Four things. First, the yarn: every kit includes premium Yon Yarn, a soft 68% cotton and 32% nylon blend with no split ends, so your hook glides instead of snagging. Second, the head start: beginner kits come with the magic ring already started for you, so you skip the hardest first step in amigurumi. Third, the lessons: every character has a step-by-step video lesson filmed in both right-hand and left-hand versions, with multilingual captions and dubs. And fourth, the world: each character has its own personality and story in the Yon World universe, and you earn Yon Coins as you learn that you can spend on your next kit.

Do I need to buy a kit to access the lessons?

No. Kit owners get their character's video lesson automatically, but you can also buy standalone video lessons for any character, or join Yon Plus to unlock them all. And if you already own a hook and worsted weight yarn, the Pattern Trainer is free and needs no purchase at all.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to Canada and the United States from our Ontario studio. Within Canada, shipping is a flat $5.95 and free on orders over $60, typically arriving in 2–9 business days. US orders also ship free over $60.

Lessons & Yon Plus

Which characters can I learn to make?

Every Yon character has its own video lesson, and the cast keeps growing. Rather than a fixed list, think of it as one skill path in two tiers. The beginner tier starts from absolute zero and assumes you have never held a hook. The intermediate tier layers on new techniques such as colour changes, embroidery, front and back loop work, split single crochet, bubble stitch, double crochet, and multi-piece assembly.

Whichever character you pick, the lesson teaches the same 14 core amigurumi skills, so any of them works as a first project. What changes is what that character adds on top. The Lessons page always shows the current cast, each character’s level, and exactly which techniques it adds. Lessons are $14.99 each, or all of them are included with Yon Plus.

What is the difference between the Pattern Trainer and the video lessons?

They teach the two halves of crochet. The free Pattern Trainer teaches literacy: how to read written crochet notation, so a line like “Rnd 3. [sc, inc] x 6 (18)” reads as a sentence instead of a code. The video lessons teach technique: what your hands actually do, filmed stitch by stitch.

Most tutorials only ever teach the second half, which is why so many people can follow along with a video but freeze the moment they open a written pattern. Pattern literacy is what lets you use any designer’s work, not just ours. You can do them in either order, though starting with the trainer costs nothing.

What are the 14 core amigurumi skills?

Every Yon lesson teaches this same foundation, so you are never guessing whether a lesson covers the basics: holding a hook and yarn, the magic ring, single crochet, increase, decrease, invisible fasten off, hiding the yarn tail, counting the stitch, counting the round, right and wrong side, attaching the eyes, sewing, stuffing, and closing the piece.

Together they are everything you need to take a plushie from first stitch to finished. Anything a character adds beyond these is a bonus technique, listed on that lesson.

Do my lessons expire, and is a written pattern included?

A lesson you buy outright is yours for life, with no time limit and no renewal. Each one also comes with a downloadable written pattern alongside the video, so you can work from either. Yon Plus works differently: it unlocks the whole library while your membership is active, and your coins and progress carry over if you cancel and resubscribe later.

What is Yon Plus?

Yon Plus is our membership, from $20/month. One membership unlocks every Yon character, a whole library of step-by-step video lessons, Yon World stories, PDF patterns, and first access to every new character drop. Cancel anytime; your coins and progress carry over if you resubscribe.

How do I access my video lesson after buying a kit?

Log in to your Yon Crochet account (use the same email you checked out with) and visit Video Lessons. Your kit's lesson will appear automatically. If you don't see it, email us at support@yoncrochet.com with your order number.

Can I watch lessons on my phone?

Absolutely. The lesson player is fully mobile-optimised. You can watch on any device, phone, tablet, or desktop, and your progress saves automatically so you can pick up right where you left off.

What languages are the lessons available in?

Every launched lesson ships with captions and audio in English, French Canadian, and Vietnamese. You can switch language inside the lesson player, independently of whether you are watching the right-hand or left-hand version.

Yon World & Characters

What is Yon World?

Yon World is the story universe every character comes from. They are not patterns with names attached: each one has a personality, a role, strengths, a weakness, and a goal, and their stories connect into a larger arc you can read on the Yon World page.

Linda the Bunny, for example, is a gentle dreamer learning that softness is a strength rather than a weakness. That is the character you are making when you crochet her, and it is why finishing a Yon project feels different from finishing an anonymous pattern.

How do I know which character to start with?

Two ways. If you want the gentlest possible start, pick a level 1 character: it teaches the 14 core skills and adds nothing extra, so nothing competes for your attention. If you would rather be matched by personality, take the short quiz on Find Your Yon Character and it will point you to the character whose story fits you best.

Either way you are not locked in. Every lesson teaches the same foundation, so there is no wrong first character.

Rewards & Dashboard

How does the Yon Coins rewards system work?

Every action earns you Yon Coins: watching lessons, completing challenges, uploading your finished project, and more. Coins accumulate on your Dashboard and can be redeemed at checkout for real discounts on future orders. As you tier up from Bronze to Diamond, each coin is worth even more.

What are the daily streaks?

Log in and complete at least one activity each day to build your streak. Longer streaks earn bonus Yon Coins and unlock streak badges. Your streak resets if you miss a day, so try to check in daily!
